NSW records one new case of coronavirus, concern about low testing numbers - NEWS.com.au

NSW has recorded just one new case of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm Friday, as health authorities urge more people to get tested.

The latest person to be diagnosed is a returned traveller in hotel quarantine.

While it’s good news for the state, NSW Health is concerned about a decrease in testing rates in recent weeks, particularly as school holidays get underway.

There were 12,258 tests reported in the 24-hour period to 8pm Friday, compared with 13,686 on Thursday.

“If you have symptoms at all we need your help,” deputy chief health officer Dr Jeremy McAnulty said on Saturday.

Earlier NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian issued a call for at least 20,000 a day.

“With the start of school holidays and increased movement of people, NSW Health is appealing to everyone to get tested as soon as symptoms appear,” a NSW Health spokesman said in a statement.

NSW recorded four new cases of coronavirus on Friday.

One of those was a man in his 50s from Sydney’s southwest, whose source of infection remains unclear.

The man lives in a supported care facility with two other people.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said on Thursday he had underlying health conditions and was in intensive care at Campbelltown Hospital.

The health department is treating 72 coronavirus cases, including three in intensive care, none of which are being ventilated.

The news comes after an alert was sent out for a Sydney shopping centre.

Anyone who attended Woolworths at Campbelltown Mall on Thursday September 17 between 1.30pm and 2.30pm is considered a casual contact of this case, and urged to monitor for symptoms and get tested if they develop.

Despite concerns about low testing numbers and mystery community transmission, NSW has begun to relax restrictions, with changes to dancing at weddings, school and community sport, and presentation ceremonies announced on Thursday.

While on Friday the state government revealed theatres, cinemas and concert halls would be able to increase their COVID-safe capacity to 50 per cent, up to 1000 guests.

Corporate events at function centres would be able to welcome up to 300 attendees from next week but COVID safe plans must be in place.
