Coronavirus Victoria: Former Health Minster Jenny Mikakos reveals ‘safety’ fears - NEWS.com.au

The home address of former Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos has been widely leaked on social media, sparking safety fears.

Ms Mikakos resigned from her role on Saturday after being thrown under the bus by Premier Daniel Andrews over the hotel quarantine scandal.

In a scathing resignation letter she said she took responsibility for the conduct of her department during the coronavirus pandemic but took a swipe at Mr Andrews, saying she “strongly disagreed” with some of his comments to the hotel quarantine inquiry.

The brutal manner in which her political career ended is said to have driven a wedge in the Victorian Labor Party, with some on the left saying Mr Andrews’ treatment of Ms Mikakos was a “disgrace”.

In the days since, it’s understood she has received a number of serious threats and her home address has been distributed.

On Monday morning, Ms Mikakos tweeted that she wouldn’t be doing media interviews at her home due to “privacy and safety”.

This appeared to be linked to her address had being leaked online, an illegal act known as doxing.

“As for the people who have distributed my home address widely I have no words,” she added in the tweet.

In her evidence to the inquiry last week, Ms Mikakos said she only knew of the use of private security guards at hotels in late May.

That raised eyebrows with many Labor MPs who were told in April of the use of security contractors, leading to claims she misled the inquiry.

Ms Mikakos issued a statement saying he she “did not recall” becoming aware of the use of guards until late May.

“The Minister categorically denies that she has misled the board in any way and has sought leave to provide information to the board to that effect,” a government spokeswoman said.

When Mr Andrews gave evidence on Friday he said that while he was “ultimately accountable” for hotel quarantine, he regarded Ms Mikakos as “responsible” for the program.

The next day Ms Mikakos resigned from her post stating she was “disappointed” that her “integrity has sought to be undermined”.

Mr Andrews said he has not spoken to his former minister since her resignation.

When she called to step down it was reported he was on another call and so she was forced to send a text to inform him she was going.

The downfall of Ms Mikakos has enraged elements of the state Labor Party, who have accused the Premier of failing to stand by her and effectively throwing her under the bus.

“It’s come down to trust and there is not a lot of trust when it comes to Andrews,’’ a source on the left told The Australian.

“The way he has treated his own people has been a total disgrace.”

While an imminent threat to Mr Andrews appears unlikely, there is now open talk in the Labor Party about how long he can hold on as leader.`

On Sunday, Mr Andrews said he had “a great deal of respect” for Ms Mikakos.

“I’m sorry for her. I’m saddened by this. I wish her well. But she made a decision and it was the only decision she could make once she determined she could no longer sit in the Cabinet.”

Victoria recorded five new cases of coronavirus on Monday with three lives lost. Today some restrictions will be eased in Melbourne including the axing of the curfew.

However, Melburnians may have to wait until mid October for any further lessening of the lockdown.
