Australian Government, experts, say AstraZeneca's claims must be examined further
The Australian Government has repeated its position that COVID-19 vaccines will ONLY be approved if they are safe and effective.
AstraZeneca claims new data shows its jab is just as powerful as those already on the market - but the information is not yet publicly available.
Initial trials showed the AstraZeneca vaccine was 62 percent effective when a person received two full doses - much lower than Pfizer and Moderna.
Federal government minister David Littleproud has told Channel Nine: the Therapeutic Goods Administration will have the final say.
"We are not going to rush this. We are going to get this right," Mr Littleproud said.
"We will go through the due process.
"We can make sure that all the processes are done to make sure that there is confidence."
Infectious diseases specialist, Associate Professor Sanjaya Senanayake said initial data released by AstraZeneca last month was confusing and the new claims must be scrutinised.
"When that announcement came out in November, it initially seemed very good, but when you broke it down and looked at it, they were using different studies and combining data," he said.
"It was all very odd. So I would really want to make sure this time they got it right."
