NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard says massive Bronte Beach Christmas party could be super spreader event - NEWS.com.au

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has become emotional as he pleaded for young people who attended a massive Christmas party at Bronte Beach to “just stop it”.

Hundreds of people were seen chanting and dancing at the party on Christmas afternoon, before riot police swooped in on the eastern suburbs beach about 3pm.

NSW Police said a move-on notice was issued and the crowd dispersed.

However they will allege a 25-year-old didn’t listen.

He has been issued with a court attendance notice for failing to comply with the move-on order.

On Saturday, Mr Hazzard said the gathering flew in the face of public health advice, and undermined the efforts of the broader community.

“It is absolutely appalling to see what was clearly a group of people, a large gathering of people, who didn’t give a damn about the rest of Sydney,” he said.

“That event, I am hoping, will not become a super spreader event. But there’s every chance that it could be.”

Mr Hazzard said COVID was still a serious risk, and the actions of backpackers who “clearly want to party” can’t continue.

“My message to those people, and to anybody that knows any of those people is: tell them to just stop it, cut it out,” he said.

“Or, you may well end up with the virus yourself, or you may end up being part of this super spreader event.”

Many in the tightly-packed crowd, believed to largely consist of backpackers, were seen not wearing masks.

Lucy Meyer, who witnessed the party, said it was so loud she could hear it from 10 minutes away as she walked off.

Photos captured the huge mess left behind by those who attended, with cups, bottles, food and rubbish left strewn across the grass.

Police also warned revellers that the park is an alcohol-free area.

It comes as the Sydney outbreak grew to 127 on Saturday – 116 of which are associated with the Avalon cluster.

Sydneysiders have been urged to restrict their movements over the long weekend to prevent the spread of the virus.

Sweeping restrictions are already in place for the northern beaches, including caps on visitor numbers and venue capacities.
