Man fighting for life after crashing while ‘racing’ another car on Monash Freeway - NEWS.com.au

A man is fighting for life after crashing into a concrete pillar while “racing” another car along Melbourne’s Monash Freeway overnight.

The Monash Freeway inbound has been closed for the second straight morning as police investigate, with traffic banking back 2km from the scene.

Police said a car and a ute appeared to be racing along the freeway towards the city before the crash late on Monday night.

Sergeant Julie-Anne Newman said the drivers were weaving and changing lanes, and narrowly avoided hitting other motorists.

The driver of the white ute then lost control about 10.45pm and smashed into a concrete pillar and rolled under the Springvale Road overpass.

The driver of the white sedan, which was seen speeding alongside the ute between Wellington and Springvale roads prior to the collision, did not stop and fled the scene.

“The driver was trapped for some time before he was extricated from the vehicle and taken to hospital by road ambulance in a life-threatening condition,” Sergeant Newman said.

His passenger – also a man – was taken to hospital with suspected non-life-threatening injuries.

The Monash Freeway inbound between Springvale and Ferntree Gully roads remained closed on Tuesday morning as Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives process the crash scene.

Detectives are desperately working to identify the white sedan and its driver and have appealed for them to come forward.

Dashcam footage released by police shows the white sedan travelling in the far right lane being followed by a white ute, before both cars merge into the middle lane in front of a motorcycle.

The footage showed both cars narrowly avoided hitting innocent motorists.

It’s believed the cars were racing for up to 6km prior to the crash.

Sergeant Newman said witnesses reported seeing both cars speeding and weaving in and out of the traffic near the EastLink overpass in Dandenong North.

All traffic is being diverted off the Monash Freeway inbound at Springvale Road and it is expected the closure will be in place until midmorning.

It comes after an allegedly stolen car crashed between Springvale and Blackburn roads on Monday morning, with four offenders seen running from the vehicle.

Any witnesses or motorists with dashcam vision have been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
