VCE, ATAR 2020 results LIVE: Victorian Year 12 students receive end of year results - The Age

Mary Lambas slipped a note under her daughter's door this morning telling Tia she was proud of her no matter her VCE result.

"The lights went on at 6.50am, and she said, 'I don't want anyone in the room'," said Mrs Lambas.

"So I slipped the congratulations cards under the doorway and I hoped that she'd read that before she got [her results].

"I saw her work so hard, to not get what you wanted would have been a little devastating so I'm really happy for her."

Tia, a student at Bentleigh Secondary College, wants to study medical imaging.

"I'm really proud of all peers," she said. "We survived the year, so that's what matters."

Fellow Bentleigh Secondary College student Nathan Stack hasn't opened his marks yet and he wasn't sure whether it was because of self-restraint or fear.

Nathan has his heart set on biomedicine yet and has shown plenty of resilience this year, spending months in hospital with a chronic health condition.

"It was a very odd year," he said.

"So I didn't really get to attend any of the online classes, I had the recordings."

"I owe a lot to the teachers here. I'm very grateful to have graduated this year."

Premier Daniel Andrews has sent a message of support to the class of 2020.

“Completing your VCE or VCAL is a major achievement in any year. But no one should underestimate just how big an accomplishment it was in 2020,” he posted to Twitter.

“Don’t worry if today’s not your day. If your score’s not what you hoped, remember there are plenty of opportunities.”

Mr Andrews said the strength and determination students showed was something to be proud of.

The Premier's results when he completed Year 12 must have been pretty good - that's him featured on the front page of this 1991 edition of the Wangaratta Chronicle:

Overnewton Anglican Community College student Mitchell Sprague received a better ATAR than he expected, and his parents have said that the coronavirus pandemic may have contributed since the move to online learning allowed him to study at his own pace.

Mitchell received an ATAR of 75.70, with his best subject score in his favourite subject, Legal Studies.

“I’ve done better than I thought. I’m really happy,” Mitchell said.

“It means I can get into the courses I want.”

His parents said they were proud of their son, adding that online learning and the challenging year for many was beneficial to Mitchell’s result.

“If COVID wasn’t around, Mitchell wouldn’t have achieved what he did this year” his mother Mandy said.

“It set up a perfect situation for him learn at his own pace and take breaks when he needed.”

Mitchell also found time this year to be a valued member of the Victorian Student Representative Council that “exists to inspire all student voices to be valued in all forms of education".

He said success was measured differently for all students and that there was always a second pathway to achieving your goals.

“Although schooling is important, the education system does not determine your self-worth.”

Mitchell plans to study a Bachelor of Arts with a Master of International Relations at Deakin University in 2021.

The agonising wait is over for Lakeview Senior College’s Bethany Kashani.

Bethany was aiming for early entry into a Bachelor of Arts at either the University of Melbourne or Monash University.

“Ideally, I need a 70-75 to qualify,” she said.

She hesitated to open her results at first. But after some encouragement from her mum, Donna Gorman, she made that final click.

A wave of relief immediately washed over her. “It’s a lot better than I thought. I was so stressed for nothing!”

“I told you,” Donna said.

She had exceeded her own expectations, achieving an ATAR of 82.25.

“I’m literally shaking.”

It should mean guaranteed entry into her dream course at either Melbourne or Monash. She hopes to pursue Politics and International Studies.

Getting through VCE in spite of the city's lockdown was not easy. “I think I did more SACs online than I did in person.”

“When we got back to school, I felt like I didn’t remember how to write, it was so difficult.”

Pushing through her studies was even more difficult without a formal or graduation ceremony.

Ms Gorman says Bethany’s ATAR was a reward for all of her hard work during a tumultuous year.

“She’s really done it tough … I’m very proud of her.”

“It’s done,” Bethany sighs. “I’m happy.”

In the post below we have included a video of a student overjoyed at receiving their ATAR, but not everyone is celebrating.

The much-anticipated VCE results morning was one of disappointment for Caroline Chisholm Catholic College student Elis Bilal.

“It’s a bit gut-wrenching. It’s not what I needed, it’s low,” she said.

Elis and her friends had been up early, texting all morning feeling “nauseous” before receiving their results.

She said the disruption of her studies by the coronavirus pandemic and remote learning had been severe.

Her school was closed early in July after a positive case was detected.

“I think it had a big impact on how well I did in the classroom and how prepared I was in exams,” she said.

While she had been hoping to be able to study an arts/law degree at Monash University, Elis has already applied for other pathways to study.

“I’ve got [Australian Catholic University] guaranteed which is good. I’ll just focus on that now," she said. “It’s just really disappointing."

Elis said she would spend the rest of the day with her family and talking to her friends.

Mount Scopus Memorial College student Marty Schwarz received a pleasant surprise when he checked his VCE results this morning.

He found he was one of the 38 students in Victoria who achieved an ATAR of 99.95 - the highest possible result.

We captured the moment he found out his results:

With raw 50s across multiple subjects such as English, Specialist Maths and Chemistry, the Mount Scopus student said he was simply hoping for the best and that everything went to plan in the moments leading to viewing his results.

"It’s amazing, I’m thrilled," Marty said.

"It has certainly been a rollercoaster journey and I'm just really happy that we've all got to this point and we can open our ATARs.

"It’s definitely been a crazy ride for all of us and I was lucky to have great support from my school, my teachers and my family."

Despite being an unprecedented year with COVID-19 and online learning, 2020 was not Marty's first encounter with virtual schooling, having received a 49 in Algorithmics last year after completing the subject via the Virtual School Victoria program.

Marty said he is interested in pursuing data science and artificial intelligence in the new year but is still "vacillating between a couple of different courses".

"I've got a couple of tough decisions to make in the next couple of days," he said.

“It's kind of timely with New Year’s Eve, so we can celebrate tomorrow night.”

We are keen to hear from VCE students who have just received their results.

How did you go with your VCE results and what was it like completing year 12 during such a disrupted year? If you would like to share your story with us for the blog, fill in the box below:

Victorian VCE students can now access their ATAR and their detailed results.

So, what next? A student's ATAR is a good marker of whether they will be able to get into their preferred university course, and for some students the score they received may mean they decide to rethink their course preferences.

This article in our results day liftout today covers what to do next, whether that means seeking advice from a careers counsellor or changing your course preferences.

It is 7am - that means students can now access their ATAR and their VCE results at the official VCAA website: resultsandatar.vic.edu.au

Some students are already reacting on social media, although I am afraid I can't include any updates on the blog at this stage as I haven't been unable to find one just yet with family-friendly language.

More than 46,000 students will shortly receive their four-digit ATAR and their detailed VCE results.

This year, 98.3 per cent of students successfully completed their VCE, up slightly from 98.1 per cent last year.

The average ATAR across all students was 68.14, and there were 38 students who achieved an ATAR of 99.95, the highest possible rank.

Female students had a slightly higher result on average than their male counterparts - the average ATAR for females was 69.45, while for males it was 66.60.

But males dominated those who attained the highest possible rank - of the 38 students who achieved an ATAR of 99.95, 32 were male.

And then there are the study score results. These are out of 50 and are what students receive for each subject they completed and are among the data points used to calculate their ATAR.

A total of 14,215 students received a study score of 40 or above in at least one subject, putting them in the top 9 per cent in the state.
