‘So surprised’: a happy end to a hard year for Ava
Ava Clarke, 17, from Tempe High School had her alarm set for 6am but an early text from NESA meant she woke up to her HSC results.
“They sent me my results at 5.30 so I woke up to them on my screen as soon as my alarm went off,” Ava said.
Ava Clarke from Tempe High School said she was surprised by her HSC results after a challenging year.
“I went downstairs and made a coffee, just trying to delay the inevitable, but ended up looking at them while I was making it anyway.”
After a difficult and unusual year, Ava wasn’t ready for what she saw.
“I was so surprised, it’s been a very hectic year, a lot of working from home and my assessment marks slipped from what they usually are, so I wasn’t expecting this,” she said.
Ava got top bands across five subjects, including a 99 in Visual Arts.

“The few weeks of studying from home were quite gruelling but luckily all the hard work paid off,” she said.
“It was definitely a learning curve staying focused and on top of everything when it was all in Google Classroom.”
She said she’s going to spend the next few hours “waiting anxiously for the ATAR” before the celebrations begin.
“When that comes out we’ll celebrate and go out to dinner and then party tomorrow.”
‘Incredible achievement’: Sarah Mitchell’s message to year 12 students
Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell has congratulated the 66,000 students who received their HSC results this morning.
“Despite all the hurdles, the Class of 2020 has performed on par with what we would expect in a normal year, which is an incredible achievement,” Ms Mitchell said.

“The Class of 2020 has displayed a tremendous sense of unity and resilience this year, and all students should be proud of what they have achieved.”
More than 1400 students got the All Round Achievers Award this year for getting the highest possible band in 10 units, 779 students got the Top Achievers award for getting a result in the highest band and more than 17,500 students got the Distinguished Achievers Award for getting at least one band six.
We’ll reveal the full honour roll at midday today.
Ms Mitchell also thanked teachers as school finishes up for the year.
“Today is also the last day for our teachers, thank you to all our school staff for the work they have done this year,” Ms Mitchell said.
“Parents, students, staff and the wider community have all gone above and beyond this year.
“Congratulations to the Class of 2020 and the entire school community of NSW for all that you have achieved this year and all the best for the future.”
‘Pretty good’: Flynn reacts to receiving his HSC results

Within seconds of logging in at 6am a range of emotions spread across Flynn Broom’s face.

The nervousness which kept him awake most of the night before quickly changed to a look of hesitation as he absorbed the six band sixes on his screen.
Then a smile quickly spread across his face.
“Pretty good,” he said, as he read through his results.
His best mark was 98 for Society and Culture, followed by 48 out of 50 for English Extension 1.

His mother Katie Broom appeared more emotional about the youngest of her three children achieving the educational milestone.
Her son Bailey, 21, now studying commerce at the University of Sydney and daughter Georgia, 24, who works as a primary school teacher looked on, sharing Flynn’s relief.
With a law degree at the University of Sydney his goal, Flynn is now anxiously waiting for his ATAR at 9am.
His HSC results have given him hope of scoring above 95 to secure his dream.
The months of studying at home during the COVID lockdown were tough, but Flynn felt supported by his strong network of friends at Patrician Brothers College where he was the school captain and dux this year.
“Everyone was in the same boat this year,” he said.
“It was hard because I prefer the face-to-face interaction with my teachers.”

Students have received their HSC results and have started sharing them with us this morning.
Ahmad Alameddine from Homebush Boys High School got band fives and sixes across his HSC subjects.
“I’m so happy with my marks,” he said.
He’s expecting to get an ATAR of about 90 later this morning.

Why physics and chemistry are delivering more band 6 HSC results

The proportion of NSW HSC students achieving band 6 in chemistry almost doubled and those achieving the top result in physics rose by 30 per cent when new syllabuses were tested for the first time last year.
Education chiefs and science teachers said the increase in top results did not mean the subjects had become easier, but rather the way the results were measured had changed.
Since 2010, the proportion of students achieving 90 or more out of 100 in chemistry had hovered between 10 and 13 per cent, before dropping below 10 per cent in the three years to 2018. Last year, it hit a decade high of 16.2 per cent.
In physics, 12.41 per cent of students achieved band 6, which was also a 10-year high. The only other time that percentage was in double figures was in 2017, when it hit 10.74 per cent. Biology results were consistent with previous years.
The state’s top students
Yesterday, nearly 120 of the state’s brightest students received first-in-course awards for topping one or more subjects this year.
The 126 awards went to 118 students.
