Cranbrook’s head congratulates students for navigating ‘this most unusual year’

Cranbrook School’s headmaster Nicholas Sampson has congratulated year 12 students for navigating “the exceptional challenges, changes and cancellations forced by circumstance throughout this most unusual year”.

He thanked students for the way in which they “cared for one another, sustained academic ambition, maintained good humour, adapted to rapidly changing circumstances”.

Mr Sampson said more than a quarter of the school’s year 12 cohort had already gotten unconditional university offers before HSC results were released.

“It is vital that our graduating students reflect upon all that they have learnt, both within the curriculum and beyond, at this particular point in their individual voyages when so much attention is focussed upon simple scores and statistics,” he wrote in the message.

“I hope today’s examination results are all that you hope they would be and wish you all tremendous success in the next chapter of your lives.”

Bianca ‘weirdly calm’ after getting her HSC results

After predicting that there would be “some ridiculous proof of inequalities” and at least one “really hard question” at the end of the maths extension 2 exam, ahead of the HSC, Mackellar Girls student Bianca Aiello was surprised by her final results on Friday.

“English, which was my worst subject through the entire year, was my best mark,” Bianca said.

She said she was a bit disappointed with her final scores for some subjects but was feeling “weirdly calm” on Friday.

“Overall I’m just weirdly calm, I’m not feeling any strong emotions about it.”

She was, however, nervous about getting her ATAR at 9am.

“I’ve been looking at ATAR calculators this morning and I’m expecting to get the ATAR I need,” she said.

Bianca is hoping to study maths and chemistry teaching at Sydney University, which requires a score of 85.

Once she gets her ATAR, she’ll head to work and then possibly celebrate with her family.

“I’m on the Northern Beaches and we were supposed to have a morning tea but it got cancelled because of the new COVID-19 outbreaks,” Bianca said.

“We’re all in our own bubble at the moment, trying to process results.”

She said she’d shared her results with her dad that morning.

“I don’t think he really understands how the HSC works, he just said ‘if you’re happy, I’m happy’,” Bianca said.

“My parents just care that I work hard.”

“I thought it was a far fetched goal to get all [top bands] but I’ve managed to surprise myself, particularly in some of my best performing subjects, Maths Advanced and E1 English, in which I’d been the least confident.

“None of this would have been possible without my incredibly supportive teachers.”

Nic said he’s already got a scholarship to study politics, philosophy and economics and international relations at the Australian National University next year and has also been shortlisted for the Tuckwell Scholarship, which requires an ATAR of at least 95.

‘So surprised’: a happy end to a hard year for Ava

Ava Clarke, 17, from Tempe High School had her alarm set for 6am but an early text from NESA meant she woke up to her HSC results.

“They sent me my results at 5.30 so I woke up to them on my screen as soon as my alarm went off,” Ava said.

“I went downstairs and made a coffee, just trying to delay the inevitable, but ended up looking at them while I was making it anyway.”

After a difficult and unusual year, Ava wasn’t ready for what she saw.

“I was so surprised, it’s been a very hectic year, a lot of working from home and my assessment marks slipped from what they usually are, so I wasn’t expecting this,” she said.

Ava got top bands across five subjects, including a 99 in Visual Arts.

“The few weeks of studying from home were quite gruelling but luckily all the hard work paid off,” she said.

“It was definitely a learning curve staying focused and on top of everything when it was all in Google Classroom.”

She said she’s going to spend the next few hours “waiting anxiously for the ATAR” before the celebrations begin.

“When that comes out we’ll celebrate and go out to dinner and then party tomorrow.”

The nervousness which kept him awake most of the night before quickly changed to a look of hesitation as he absorbed the six band sixes on his screen.

Then a smile quickly spread across his face.

“Pretty good,” he said, as he read through his results.

His best mark was 98 for Society and Culture, followed by 48 out of 50 for English Extension 1.

His mother Katie Broom appeared more emotional about the youngest of her three children achieving the educational milestone.

Her son Bailey, 21, now studying commerce at the University of Sydney and daughter Georgia, 24, who works as a primary school teacher looked on, sharing Flynn’s relief.

With a law degree at the University of Sydney his goal, Flynn is now anxiously waiting for his ATAR at 9am.

His HSC results have given him hope of scoring above 95 to secure his dream.

The months of studying at home during the COVID lockdown were tough, but Flynn felt supported by his strong network of friends at Patrician Brothers College where he was the school captain and dux this year.

“Everyone was in the same boat this year,” he said.

“It was hard because I prefer the face-to-face interaction with my teachers.”

Why physics and chemistry are delivering more band 6 HSC results

By Jordan Baker and Nigel Gladstone

The proportion of NSW HSC students achieving band 6 in chemistry almost doubled and those achieving the top result in physics rose by 30 per cent when new syllabuses were tested for the first time last year.

Education chiefs and science teachers said the increase in top results did not mean the subjects had become easier, but rather the way the results were measured had changed.

Since 2010, the proportion of students achieving 90 or more out of 100 in chemistry had hovered between 10 and 13 per cent, before dropping below 10 per cent in the three years to 2018. Last year, it hit a decade high of 16.2 per cent.

In physics, 12.41 per cent of students achieved band 6, which was also a 10-year high. The only other time that percentage was in double figures was in 2017, when it hit 10.74 per cent. Biology results were consistent with previous years.

The state’s top students

Yesterday, nearly 120 of the state’s brightest students received first-in-course awards for topping one or more subjects this year.

The 126 awards went to 118 students.

We spoke to the first student to top both chemistry and physics in 17 years, Sariena Ye, who described receiving both awards as “a bit surreal”.
