NSW northern regions brace for more rain, as flood warnings continue - ABC News

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) continues to warn of heavy rainfall on the way for the NSW Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers regions, as emergency crews work to protect homes.

A low pressure trough off the southern Queensland coast is sparking heavy rainfall that may ease on Sunday but come back with full force later in the evening.

The bad weather is expected to continue across Monday before easing on Tuesday.

The BOM said rainfall could be matched with thunderstorms, producing a high risk of flash flooding.

A flood watch and severe weather warning remain in place for heavy rain, damaging winds, abnormally high tides and damaging surf for the Northern Rivers and parts of the Mid North Coast.

Areas affected include Tweed Heads, Byron Bay, Lismore, Kyogle, Yamba, Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Maclean, Woolgoolga, Sawtell and Dorrigo.

Winds are expected to exceed 90 kilometres per hour from Sunday evening along the coast north of Yamba, on the Clarence River.

Waves could top 5 metres and abnormally high tides are expected at Ballina, with risk of coastal erosion.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) said crews from Fire and Rescue NSW are heading to northern locations to help in flood-affected areas and relieve local volunteers who worked yesterday and overnight.

Crews have worked through the night sandbagging homes with about 300 calls for help.

SES Assistant Commissioner Dean Storey says conditions are set to get worse tonight.

"In the last 24 hours in the border area we've seen between 300 and 400 millimetres of rain, which is very, very heavy rain, which has resulted in a number of flood rescues in that Tweed area and a flood warning in place for minor to moderate flood warning for the Tweed River as well," he said.

At Couchy Creek near the Queensland border, there has been 393 millimetres of rain since 9:00am yesterday.
