Sawtell residents issued evacuation warning amid flash flooding threats for NSW and Qld - NEWS.com.au

Some residents in the North Coast of NSW have been told to prepare to evacuate as heavy winds and strong rain has led to a “major risk” of flash flooding and tidal surges in the state and Queensland.

Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to continue battering large parts of the east coast on Saturday with the Bureau of Meteorology warning residents in southeast Queensland and NSW’s Mid Coast to prepare immediately.

Residents at Sawtell, a coastal village near Coffs Harbour, have been doorknocked and told they may need to move to higher ground with the local surf life saving club open as an evacuation point.

“An evacuation warning is a head’s up for people to possibly evacuate,” State Emergency Services media officer Ilana Pender-Rose said.

“It’s for six properties in Boronia Street in Sawtell. Our volunteers were out doorknocking very early this morning to warn residents that they might need to leave if the water continues to rise.

“We’re going to continue to monitor the situation and we will issue an evacuation order if necessary.”

The evacuation warning was issued following heavy rainfall on Friday which is expected to continue on Saturday.

There is potential for moderate to major flooding near Bellinger River by Monday or Tuesday, meteorologist Alex Majchrowski said.

He warned residents to follow the advice of the State Emergency Service.

“If it’s flooded, forget it,” he said. “It doesn‘t take much water to start moving a car — it only needs to be as deep as an iPhone.

“If it’s turbulent and murky, it’s hard to gauge the depth of the water so I’d advise everyone to stay safe and follow the advice of the SES.

The largest rainfall since last summer is expected to fall in this region throughout the weekend, BOM meteorologist Dean Narramore said on Friday.

“A severe weather warning and flood watches are current for the mid north coast and parts of the Northern Rivers in northeast NSW,” he said.

“The focus of heavy rain will be in the mid northeast coast today and moving into the Northern Rivers on Saturday, as it slowly moves north up the coast.

“King tides, combined with large waves, means beach and coastal erosion and an inundation of sea water into low-lying areas is a major risk for coastal communities on the high tide on Monday.”

Mr Narramore said the BOM is expecting flash flooding and riverine flooding with widespread four-day totals of 100 to 250 millimetres likely with isolated falls up to 400 millimetres possible.

“Now is the time to prepare your house and property for heavy rain, strong winds and coastal erosion and flash flooding,” he said.

The Bellinger River, southwest of Coffs Harbour, is expected to flood on Saturday around 6pm, with flood watches current for a number of other rivers in Northern NSW.
