Victoria records one new coronavirus case in hotel quarantine, no local transmission - ABC News

Victoria has recorded one new case of coronavirus in hotel quarantine, as it reaches its 45th day in a row without locally acquired COVID-19 infections.

The returned traveller acquired the virus overseas.

It brings the total number of active cases in the state's revamped quarantine scheme to seven. There are no confirmed active cases within the community.

The Department of Health and Human Services said there were 5,024 test results processed on Sunday.

The death toll remains at 820.

Victoria started accepting returned travellers into its overhauled quarantine program last Monday, the first time in four months.

The scheme has a new chain of command and strict infection control practices in place after the previous iteration was linked to most of the infections in the state's second wave.

There is a daily cap of 160 travellers per day, with the potential for that number to be expanded.

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton had said he expected about 1 per cent of the returned travellers to be diagnosed with the virus.

One new case was added to the state's tally on Sunday — a boy under the age of five, whose parents had already been diagnosed.

Five people announced as confirmed cases on Saturday were the first reported infections in Victoria in six weeks.

Authorities have not confirmed which countries the positive cases came from, or which flights they were on when they arrived in Melbourne.

Travellers are subject to asymptomatic testing on days three and 11 of their 14-day quarantine period.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19, people with symptoms or those with complex health issues are housed in a "health hotel".

Two hotels have been set aside for that purpose, but only the Novotel South Wharf is operational while authorities make ventilation changes to the Holiday Inn Flinders Lane.
