Former WA Rebels gang president Nick Martin has been killed in an overnight shooting south of Perth.
WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson confirmed the 51-year-old bikie boss – who was facing criminal charges for “financial matters” was gunned down at Kwinana Motorplex about 8.40pm.
Gang Crime Squad officers are investigating the shooting.
Paramedics also treated a 31-year-old at the scene. The man – believed to also be a Rebels member – was taken to hospital.
Commissioner Dawson also said an eight-year-old boy had sustained a very minor wound in the violent attack. He did not need to go to hospital.
The boy was found beside Martin on the lap of another adult, the commissioner did not go into detail about whether the boy was connected to the people involved.
“He’s now at home with his parents but that is an example of where innocent parties can get caught up in this violent criminal gang which has resulted in a homicide,” Commissioner Dawson told reporters on Sunday morning.
It is understood a third party shot Martin and the other man, and is currently on the run.
When questioned about the possibility of retaliatory attacks, Commissioner Dawson warned police were at “a state of heightened readiness”.
He urged anyone with information to come forward.
“There were hundreds of people in the close vicinity. Anyone that has any information please contact us, if you have any vision or any information, please let us know,” Commissioner Dawson said.
“This violent crime took place in a public open place, there were innocent people around including children … that‘s why we all must be outraged at this.”
Gang Crime Squad detectives are investigating the incident.
Martin stood down from the top job of the WA Rebels a few months ago as he faced financial crimes charges.
Commissioner Dawson said Martin had “lost his status” within the bikie gang.
“We know there’s friction and bad terms certainly within the Rebels motorcycle outlaw gang themselves,” he said.
“I’ve got little doubt that there’s a lot of friction among gangs because of heightened police activity and we have seized lots of drugs, money and firearms.”
Martin’s death comes nearly a decade after he survived a shooting in his Balcatta driveway in 2011.
That shooting came during a violent feud with the Rock Machine gang. A year later his car was firebombed.
