Global weekly cases on the decline, WHO says
Let's start with some good news.
The World Health Organization's Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, says the global number of new COVID-19 infections being reported is the lowest it's been in months — dropping from five million a week to about two-and-a-half million since January.
"The number of reported cases of COVID-19 globally has now declined for the fifth consecutive week," he says.
"Last week saw the lowest number of reported weekly cases since October. So far this year, the number of weekly reported cases has fallen by almost half."
It comes as the WHO approves two more COVID vaccines for emergency use, produced by AstraZeneca-SKBio (Republic of Korea) and the Serum Institute of India.
The rollout of these vaccines will be done through COVAX, but WHO Assistant-Director General for Access to Medicines and Health Products Mariângela Simão says while this is good news, there needs to be a continued push of production to meet demand worldwide.
“Countries with no access to vaccines to date will finally be able to start vaccinating their health workers and populations at risk, contributing to the COVAX Facility’s goal of equitable vaccine distribution,” Dr Simão says.
‘But we must keep up the pressure to meet the needs of priority populations everywhere and facilitate global access. To do that, we need two things – a scale-up of manufacturing capacity, and developers’ early submission of their vaccines for WHO review.”
