Coronavirus Australia live news: Vaccination rollout for aged care, frontline workers begins on Monday - ABC News

Here's what we know about the vaccine rollout in Victoria

Victoria has set up nine vaccination hubs in nine major hospitals across the state:

  • Western Health
  • Austin Health
  • Monash Health
  • Barwon Health
  • Goulburn Valley Health
  • Latrobe Health
  • Bendigo Health
  • Ballarat Health
  • Albury-Wodonga Health

The hubs are all equipped with super-cold freezers that can keep the Pzifer-BioNTech vaccine at the required -70 degrees Celsius.

Under the national vaccine rollout plan, Victoria is set to get about 11,000 doses of the vaccine per week, which is 33,000 doses over three weeks as part of phase 1a.

Like the rest of the nation, the first people to get the jab in Victoria will be hotel quarantine workers, airport staff, frontline healthcare and aged care workers and carers.

“Those communities of really vulnerable people, that once they get this vaccine will be able to know that not only is it safe and accessible, but it will help save their lives in the situation if they come in contact with the virus," Health Minister Martin Foley said.

Premier Daniel Andrews foreshadowed that the families of those high-risk groups may then be next in line to receive the jab, as part phases 1a and 1b.

“The quicker we can get the workers … get them the jab , their families – then all of a sudden you've got two of the three rings covered … in some cases you'll have all three. So case, contacts, contacts of contacts," Mr Andrews said.

While Victoria will deal with the distribution of the vaccines once the vials land in the state, Mr Foley has made clear “this is a Commonwealth-led program” and the rollout in the state depends on “what we get and when”.

“It is a really significant turning point in this pandemic, and one that the Victorian government will support our partners at the Commonwealth in delivering,” he said.
