Large factory fire closes South Melbourne Primary School - NEWS.com.au

A Melbourne primary school has been closed for the day after a suspicious fire destroyed a factory and sent toxic smoking spewing across three suburbs.

Students and staff at South Melbourne Primary School have been advised not to attend on Thursday as the large blaze that engulfed the packaging factory overnight was opposite the school.

Fire Rescue Victoria assistant chief fire officer Mick Tisbury said although there was no damage to the school, there was still a lot of smoke in the area.

“There’s still a fair bit of smoke in the area and it’s right opposite the primary school,” he told 3AW.

“If you’ve got kids attending that school, don’t bring them to school today, they’ve got a day off, including the teachers and the staff as we take the health and safety of the community, especially kids, very seriously.”

Firefighters were called to the single storey brick warehouse on Ferrars Street in South Melbourne just before midnight, but the ferocity of the blaze meant they couldn’t enter the building.

Mr Tisbury said they were forced to withdraw fire crews after the roof collapsed and had to attack the blaze from the outside.

The blaze was brought under control about two hours later after firefighters used ladder trucks to stop it from spreading to nearby properties and the school.

No injuries were reported.

Police said the fire was being treated as suspicious.

Sergeant Julie-Anne Newman said a crime scene guard has been placed around the property overnight and it was expected an arson chemist and detectives would revisit the scene on Thursday morning.

It’s expected the streets surrounding the factory, including Ferrars and Buckhurst street, will be closed for most of Thursday as the investigations and clean up take place.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be determined.

An advice message was issued for South Melbourne, South Wharf and Southbank due to the smoke with nearby residents and businesses urged to close windows and doors.

Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit detectives anyone in the area at the time of the fire or anyone with dashcam who may have been driving near Buckhurst or Ferrars streets to come forward.

Anyone with information has been urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
