Victoria's lockdown backed by infectious diseases expert
An infectious diseases expert has backed the decision by Victorian authorities to put the state into lockdown to address an outbreak of the Delta variant of COVID-19.
The state has entered an unprecedented fifth lockdown after 18 cases were confirmed this week, all linked to the New South Wales outbreak.
Michell Ananda-Rajah from Alfred Health told News Breakfast that Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was justified in ordering the five-day lockdown.
"I think it was the right call, he's going in hard and fast in order for us to get out of this as quickly as possible, and we've seen from the experience of Sydney that this is actually the right way to do things," she said.
Dr Ananda-Rajah said New South Wales was taking a big risk by not enforcing a tougher lockdown along the same lines as Victoria.
"This is a really high-risk strategy, I don't know why they are just staring at these numbers day after day after day when they know what the modelling is going to show, that this is going to stretch out potentially for months."
"The issue here is that if this stretches out at this sort of level of restrictions, stage 3 say, for the next few months you're going to end up with a community that is going to end up incredibly fatigued, and potentially non-compliant."
