South Australia will open its borders to Western Australia and the Northern Territory effective immediately, but borders will remain closed to New South Wales and the ACT.
Key points:
- South Australia's border with NSW and ACT will remain closed
- People returning from WA and the NT will no longer need to quarantine but will have to be tested on days one, five and 13
- Border restrictions with parts of Queensland have also been eased
People returning from WA and the NT will be required to have a test on days one, five and 13, but from Sunday it is expected testing requirements will cease.
Border restrictions are also changing with Queensland.
They will remain closed to people coming from Brisbane, Moreton Bay, the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, the Gold Coast, Logan, Redlands, the Lockyer Valley, the Scenic Rim and Somerset.
People coming into South Australia from Townsville and the Big Red Bash at Birdsville will be allowed, but will need to meet the same testing requirements as WA and the NT.
The borders will open to the rest of Queensland without restrictions.
"We have considered the ACT very carefully, we know there are no cases there, we haven't had community transmission in Canberra for an extended period of time, but this in some ways confounds the epidemiologists because we know this is a very porous border," Premier Steven Marshall said.
"We would like to ease the border restrictions there are between [the] ACT and SA but because of the Delta variance and our concerns there, we won't be doing that today, but we will keep a close eye on that."
People who are currently quarantining from areas where restrictions have been eased will be allowed to leave their homes today, unless they have been to a listed exposure site.
Chief Medical Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier said those who are allowed to leave their homes must still adhere to testing on days one, five and 13.
"We also have a requirement for you not to attend a COVID management plan event in our state or another vulnerable site such as a hospital or an aged care facility. Of course, if you need care, that's a completely different matter," she said.
"If you have come back from a different state please check that information carefully and if you do need to remain in quarantine please remain in quarantine."
South Australia has recorded one new COVID-19 case overnight.
The man in his 20s acquired the virus overseas and has been in a medi-hotel since his arrival.
A 29-year-old with COVID-19 has also been moved to hospital from Tom's Court.
