Police have told a court a 21-year-old Adelaide woman was ambushed and stabbed by members of her own family because she was dating someone outside her faith.
Key points:
- Five people have now been charged with attempted murder over the alleged attack
- Witnesses reported that the stabbing victim, a 21-year-old woman, was forced into a car
- The court heard the victim, from a Muslim family, had been dating a Christian man whom her family disapproved of
Five people — three men and two women — have now been charged with attempted murder and unlawful detention over the alleged attack, which took place in a car park at the Sefton Plaza shopping centre on Main North Road on Tuesday morning.
Witnesses reported the woman had been stabbed and forced into a Holden Cruze by a group of people.
Police then attended a home in nearby Blair Athol where they found the victim with serous stab wounds.
She was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Detectives on Tuesday arrested her 56-year-old father and 30-year-old brother, before arresting a third man on Tuesday night.
A 55-year-old woman and a 28-year-old woman were arrested on Wednesday morning.
The three men appeared in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday afternoon, where they did not apply for bail.
Police prosecutors told the court the victim was stabbed twice with a kitchen knife.
They alleged her brother then drove her to a house where she felt she was "slowly dying from blood loss".
Police prosecutor Grant Watterson told the court that the victim, who is from a Muslim family, had been dating a Christian man whom her family disapproved of.
"Her family disapproves of the relationship because of cultural and religious issues," he said.
"The victim is a Muslim … and her partner is a Christian."
Mr Watterson told the court that the victim had been staying with her boyfriend, and had organised to meet up with her mother at the shopping centre at Sefton Park.
He said the woman's partner had driven there and dropped her off.
"She was talking to her mother when her sister appeared and grabbed her with both hands," Mr Watterson said.
"At this point she saw her father, her brother and her brother-in-law approach her from the side.
The court heard that, at that point, the woman saw a 15-centimetre kitchen knife in front of her, but "can't remember who had possession of it".
"There was then a commotion and she was stabbed twice, the most serious stab wound to her side, which was very deep," Mr Watterson said.
Victim hospitalised with 'minutes to spare'
Police allege the mother and sister then put the victim into the car, and her brother is alleged to have driven them back to the family home.
"The bleeding was out of control," Mr Watterson said.
"She screamed for her family to call an ambulance as she knew she was in trouble and slowly dying.
The prosecution said the woman had suffered damage to her liver and kidney, and had suffered internal bleeding, which required surgery.
"A witness had obtained the registration number of vehicles in attendance, and police and ambulance [personnel] had attended very quickly and rescued her and got her to hospital, frankly with minutes to spare," Mr Watterson said.
None of the three men charged applied for bail, and they will appear in court again in March next year.
The two arrested women will appear in court on Thursday.
