Live: Victoria to axe Commonwealth Games plans due to financial constraints, Daniel Andrews confirms - ABC News

There's been understandable disappointment from those regional centres that were due to host the Games.

Latrobe City Mayor Kellie O'Callaghan conceded it was going to be a mammoth task to deliver on what was promised.

"The [athletes'] village would have been a bit of a challenge in terms of so many across the state, building them all at once," Cr O'Callaghan said.

"[The] increased cost on everything that anyone's needing to purchase, engage with or contract at the moment has escalated to the point where it's just become an unreasonable burden."

The Latrobe Valley was set to host shooting, parashooting, badminton, rugby sevens and women's Twenty20 cricket.

Regional Cities Victoria deputy chair and Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali says the promised investment in regional facilities must still be made.

"Obviously, disappointing is an understatement," he said.

"We're now focused on what does $2 billion mean for regional Victoria?"
