Two men have been arrested after a dramatic hours-long pursuit in Sydney’s western suburbs, which involved police firing shots at the car, and ended with the Tasering of the alleged 21-year-old driver in the Blue Mountains.
Following reports of a man swapping number plates on a black Holden Commodore, officers saw the vehicle in Lalor Park about 9.30am. When the driver failed to stop, police began a pursuit.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and PolAir joined the chase through nearby suburbs, before officers again tried to stop the car about 10.40am in Winston Hills.
A senior constable grabbed the slowing car, but the driver accelerated and the officer was flung across the bonnet of a nearby police car.
Police fired a number of shots towards the sedan before it was driven onto the North West T-Way.
A short time later, a 21-year-old man fled the car and was immediately arrested. However, the driver continued north on Old Windsor Road and onto the M7, travelling west before turning onto the M4 and the Great Western Highway to the Blue Mountains.
About 11.15am in Springwood, police again tried to stop the Commodore, this time using road spikes, but they were unsuccessful and the car continued up the Great Western Highway with PolAir in pursuit.
The driver then hit traffic congestion past Katoomba and made a U-turn, heading back down the Great Western Highway.
About 11.40am – more than two hours after the chase began – the tactical operations unit stopped the car on the Great Western Highway at Katoomba, where police used a Taser to arrest the driver.
The man was assessed at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Katoomba Hospital where he remains under police guard.
The man arrested in Winston Hills has been taken to Blacktown police station where he is assisting with inquiries.
Acting Assistant Commissioner David Waddell said he expected charges to be laid against the two men, who are known to police.
“It’s very early in the investigation. But obviously, it was a pursuit that posed a significant risk to the community which is why we deployed our tactical operations unit and why our high-risk vehicle intercept was authorised,” he said.
“There will be serious charges later on.”
Some officers involved in the pursuit were taken to hospital, all with minor injuries.
“Three officers [have] gone to hospital, one with a shoulder injury and two others with minor injuries just as a precaution,” he said.
Several roads remain closed or impacted at Winston Hills and Katoomba and motorists are urged to avoid the areas.
