A man has been arrested over the alleged abduction of a young primary school girl in a suburb south of Perth.
The nine-year-old girl was allegedly taken by a stranger while she was heading into school in Warnbro, south Perth about 8.45am on Friday.
Western Australian Police said a parent at the school had raised the alarm after she saw the girl getting into a silver ute.
“They thought that was suspicious and immediately reported it to the school,” Acting Det. Insp. Scott Johnson from the sex crimes division said.
“The school did their due diligence in checking to see if the child was at school and contacted the parents and she wasn't so police responded.”
The child was located a short time later at an IGA store after staff members noticed the girl was in distress and called police.
“A number of police resources were immediately deployed to the area to locate the child. The child was located outside a supermarket in Port Kennedy area a short time later,” they said in a tweet.
“A male in his 30s, believed to be the driver of the vehicle, is in custody and assisting police with inquiries.”
The West Australian was told by witnesses the girl’s hands were bound by zip-ties while a local worker told them they saw her coming out of IGA before being taken into an ambulance.
“We were shocked by it, she looked tiny. She was crying and distressed,” she said.
“I thought at first she had lost her mum but she didn't have any shoes on which I thought was concerning.”
Vision released by WA Police showed the man in his 30s wearing a hi-vis uniform leaning against a silver ute while speaking to officers.
The girl was taken with her family to Perth Children’s Hospital to undergo a medical check.
Det. Insp. Scott Johnson praised the quick-thinking of the witness who reported the incident to the school efficiently, while warning parents to maintain vigilance on the topic of "stranger danger".
"That's probably one of the primary reasons that this resolved — a parent noticing that something wasn't right, seeing a child get into a car when they were almost at school and reporting it straight away - it's of utmost importance," he said.
"It's one of those things that parents need to have that hard conversation with children about stranger danger and talking to anybody or going with anybody or doing anything online."
