Desperate search for 3yo boy missing in thick WA bushland - NEWS.com.au

A frantic search continues for a three-year-old boy who went missing while playing with dogs outside a house set in dense bushland in Western Australia’s south, but there are concerns locals trying to help will trample clues.

His family is visiting the picturesque surfing town of Yallingup and last saw young James with the pets in the yard of the Karli Rise property they are staying at about 7.30am.

A WA Police spokesman said they went briefly inside and found he was not there when they returned, but the dogs had remained.

Police officers from nearby towns, sniffer dogs and SES volunteers are combing the area, which is about 1.5km from the coast, while a police helicopter is doing an aerial search. The WA Police mounted section has also been sent from Perth.

Locals have teamed up to help, with dozens registering interest at the Yallingup Town Hall, some offering dirt bikes to make their way through the dense scrub.

Police say the community’s bid to assist has been significant but are concerned it will compromise the search, which is focused on looking for prints left by James’ wellington boots.

“It is important members of the public do not venture into the bushland areas as they may inadvertently compromise evidence of where James has walked, and that could impact on the ability of trained searchers to track his movements,” police said.

They are urging members of the public not to attend and those already on site to register their attendance at an incident command post at the DFES SES building on Caves Road.

“Anyone who is in the area already is asked to stick to the main tracks and roads.”

One of the citizen searchers, Vangy Baker, posted video on social media showing the perilous terrain.

“Holes and cars buried in pits, heaps of dangerous places that he could have wandered off to on an adventure,” she said.

Members of the public were searching beyond the official search grid, she said, “but it’s not co-ordinated very well, I think”.

Temperatures were around 12C when the boy vanished and it has been raining intermittently.

James is fair skinned with blonde hair and blue eyes, and is wearing white Spiderman pyjamas.

Anyone who sees the boy is asked to remain with him and call police immediately on 000.

Set in the Margaret River region and about 250km south of Perth, Yallingup is a known for its beaches, wineries and limestone caves.
