NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says John Barilaro remaining deputy premier following last week’s koala coup is a matter for the Nationals party not the government.
At a press conference on Sunday, the Premier said she would continue to work with the Nationals to uphold the coalition, however the decision as to whether Mr Barilaro should remain leader would be matter for the party.
“Whoever leads the Nationals is a matter for the Nationals party,” she said.
“My job is to provide strong and stable government for the people of this great state.”
Ms Berejiklian’s comments comes after a stoush with the Nationals over the state’s koala protection policy.
National MPs threatened to effectively move to the crossbench, however backed down on Friday when Ms Berejiklian told the party to fall into line or resign by 9am that morning.
Further fractures in the relationship between the Nationals leader and Transport Minister Andrew Constance have also resurfaced, after text messages were sent out to voters in his electorate of Bega.
“The reason I am angry is on Friday, the Nats whacked out a text message … attacking this issue, when they had reached an agreement that morning to be good Coalition partners,” he said.
Mr Constance said Mr Barilaro’s decision to remain leader of the party was a “matter for his conscience,” with the senior Liberal MP questioning whether he would be able to continue working with the Deputy Premier.
“I am pretty hurt from what has been said,” he said.
“Leadership is not what we saw on display last week. Leadership is about bringing everyone together.”
Mr Constance said the text messages that were sent out targeted people who had been greatly impacted from the summer bushfire events, and failed to identify the extinction crisis facing the state’s koala population.
The relationship between the two ministers had previously soured during the preselection for the federal by-election for the seat of Eden-Monaro, when Mr Barilaro reportedly called the Transport Minister a “c..t”.
