‘Disregard relations’: China’s warning shot to Australia over World Trade Organisation complaint - NEWS.com.au

Australia’s complaint about China at the World Trade Organisation has been attacked as “vanity” by Chinese state-owned media.

The Global Times on Wednesday warned that the superpower had exercised restraint – but was feeling “more confident to disregard relations” with Australia.

The shot follows the Morrison government announcing it would refer China to the independent trading umpire over massive tariffs on its barley imports.

Trade Minister Simon Birmingham has rejected allegations that Australian farmers had exported products at lower than market prices as alleged by Beijing officials.

But China’s foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin stressed that the Australian government should take China’s concerns “seriously” and take “concrete actions” to rectify discriminatory practices targeting Chinese companies.

“Australia has staged many petty actions, including vanity, timidity, pretentiousness and double dealing,” the Global Times wrote.

“It seems Canberra has taken destroying relations with Beijing in a high-profile manner as a chance to show its loyalty and commitment to strengthen the US-Australia alliance.

“But the Chinese people are more confident to disregard relations with Australia.”

The mouthpiece for the Chinese government said the intensifying conflict between the two partners would be detrimental to trade.

But Mr Birmingham said he was “deeply frustrated” with China’s actions.

“It is the right thing to call out wrongdoing by China and to call in the independent umpire,” Senator Birmingham told Today.

“It is not a quick fix … but in the meanwhile what we seek to do is to help our farmers and exporters to access other markets.”

Crossbench senator Jacqui Lambie told Today that Western countries needed to band together if there was going to be a trade war with China.

“I don’t really think that China will give a stuff what the umpire says to be honest with you,” Senator Lambie said.

“Get the US there, anybody else, and if you go there, go there together.

“Not just little Australia sitting here taking the lead.”

The sentiment was also shared by the Global Times, which accused Australia of “stupidly” making itself the frontline of China-West confrontation.

It warned that Australia’s expectations of how China would respond was “wishful thinking”.

“China has exercised restraint,” it wrote.
