Sydney news: COVID-19 alert for travellers returning from Melbourne after three cases confirmed - ABC News

Here's what you need to know this morning.

COVID Melbourne hotel update

NSW Health has updated its advice for recent visitors to the Holiday Inn at Melbourne Airport, after three coronavirus cases were found there.

Health authorities are investigating suspected coronavirus transmission within the state's hotel quarantine system at the hotel.

NSW Health said anyone who worked or stayed on any floor between January 27 and February 9 is now considered a close contact.

People in that category must get tested immediately and isolate for 14 days regardless of the result.

The previous advice was that only people who had been on the third floor were close contacts.

Crown casino future

The jewel in the Crown empire could be converted to luxury apartments if Sydney's high-roller casino is not allowed to open, an urban design expert predicts.

After an 18-month inquiry, the former chief judge found James Packer's company was not suitable to hold the gaming licence for Barangaroo.

That means if NSW's gaming regulator adopts the recommendations, Crown cannot operate Sydney's second casino without significant reform.

Around 100 hectares in the Sydney CBD including buildings, parks, streets and gardens have been added to the National Heritage list.

On the eastern side of the CBD, the area covers the First Government House site, Hyde Park Barracks, the Conservatorium of Music, the Mint and Parliament House, Hyde Park, the Domain, Macquarie Place and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Environment Minister Sussan Ley said the area was associated with people of importance in Australia's cultural history including Bennelong, Governors Phillip and Macquarie and Francis Greenway.

"[It] is a layered landscape which can vividly show how the area has evolved over time, from its earliest use by Aboriginal people through to its role as a penal colony and early European settlement, and vibrant modern city," Ms Ley said.

Man allegedly assaults women

A man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly assaulted two women in Annandale, in Sydney's inner west, on Monday.

Police have been told a man allegedly punched a 27-year-old woman in the head, before a 29-year-old woman intervened and was struck with what is believed to be a samurai sword.

The man fled on foot and the women were treated by paramedics before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Following patrols of the area, police arrested a 44-year-old man on Macquarie Street, who will appear at Newtown court today.

Sydney swimmer search suspended

A search has been suspended following reports of a swimmer missing in the water at the northern end of Maroubra Beach in Sydney's east.

Police were called to the northern end of Maroubra Beach about 8:00pm on Tuesday following reports a swimmer appeared to be struggling.

Police are conducting a search of the beach, with the assistance of a rescue helicopter, but they could not locate the swimmer.

CCTV footage appears to show a swimmer leaving the water shortly afterward, however police are still seeking information.

Anyone with information or was in the water, swimming or surfing between 7:45pm and 8:15pm is urged to contact police immediately.
