A person who tested positive to COVID-19 after finishing their 14-day stint in hotel quarantine was tested three days after leaving the Sofitel Wentworth in Sydney’s CBD.
It was initially reported that the person was tested two days after leaving hotel quarantine but NSW Health now says the test occurred on the third day.
The positive result was found after NSW introduced a new “enhanced 16-day follow up” policy where people are contacted two days after leaving quarantine and told to get tested the next day.
The person, from the Wollongong area, arrived from South America on January 19 before doing two weeks of quarantine.
During this time they had returned two negative tests.
They didn’t have symptoms when they were tested the third time, NSW Health said.
NSW said seven close contacts of the positive case had so far tested negative.
“Ten close contacts of the case were also identified and directed to self-isolate. Seven of those have already returned negative tests,” the department said in a statement.

But contact tracers have sprung into action after the person visited a number of venues in Wollongong and surrounding areas while potentially infectious.
Early investigations suggest the person was infected overseas, and there was no indication at this stage of transmission in hotel quarantine.
Testing is underway to determine whether or not they have one of the mutant variants.
There were no new cases of COVID-19 recorded in NSW on Monday.
