A deputy principal at a Sydney high school has been charged with online child exploitation offences after allegedly having sexual conversations with someone he thought was a teenage girl.

The 47-year-old man was arrested by police in the western suburbs, at about 4.30pm on Monday.

Police will allege the man thought he was speaking with a 14-year-old girl when he began discussing the sexual acts he wished to perform on the child.

He also allegedly made plans to meet and pay the child for sex.

Police searched his Rouse Hill home and took several items including a laptop and an electronic storage device. 

The teacher was then taken to Granville Police Station, where he was charged with use carriage service to procure child under 16 years for sexual activity and use carriage service to transmit child abuse material. 

Detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crime Squad's Child Exploitation Internet Unit (CEIU) began speaking with the man online earlier this month.  

He will appear at Fairfield Local Court on Tuesday.
