Can Queensland breathe a sigh of relief after its latest COVID-19 scare?
A virologist says it is still a bit too early to say whether Queensland has dodged a bullet in community transmission of COVID-19 after a Victorian couple infected with the virus drove into the state without going into hotel quarantine.
The pair crossed the border at Goondiwindi on June 5 and drove to the Sunshine Coast, where they visited shops and cafes while potentially infectious.
University of Queensland virologist Dr Kirsty Short said it was "still a bit too early" to say the state had dodged a bullet.
"Really, the rule of thumb is, you want to wait 14 days from when they're in the community to know that you have no additional COVID cases," Dr Short said.
"What's really important at the moment is for individuals to come forward for testing, in particular those who've crossed paths with these Victorians."
Dr Short said the couple still posed a risk, even if they were at the tail end of the disease when they entered the state.
"It's most likely that they were not very infectious when they were in Queensland, but we don't know that for sure so again, the best approach is just to do the testing," she said.
