The Northern Territory government says 20 people have been sent to quarantine after they were identified as close contacts of a man who tested positive to COVID-19 at a major gold mine in Central Australia.
Key points:
- The 20 people worked at the mine when another worker may have been infectious
- They have now been sent into mandatory quarantine
- It's unknown how long they were in the community or where they went
The Newmont-owned Granites gold mine, 540 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs, was locked down after the worker tested positive on Friday night.
The 20 people, who had been out in the community, are among a group of 900 workers who left the mine during a week-long period when authorities believe the man may have been infectious.
Nineteen of them, including one from Katherine, are now in quarantine at the Howard Springs facility near Darwin, while one other has entered supervised quarantine in Alice Springs.
The government has not said how long they were in the community or where they went.
The government said it had also made contact with people interstate who were considered close contacts.
Of the group of 900 workers who left the mine, more than 220 remain in the NT.
About 400 flew to Brisbane and 250 to Perth, according to the government.
"I have directed more resources into this mammoth contact tracing effort to make sure we have every single person in isolation and understand all their movements," Chief Minister Michael Gunner wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday night.
"We have confidence in our testing and tracing and believe we have the right restrictions in place at this time.
"But that is not to say things cannot change and I promise we will act swiftly if we need to."
There are currently more than 700 workers in lockdown at the mine, with about 70 expected to be transferred to the Howard Springs facility after also being identified as close contacts.
The Northern Territory government has not confirmed the strain of the virus but is acting as if it is the highly infectious Delta strain.
