News outlets around the work have reacted to Sydney’s lockdown, citing Australia’s “slow vaccination rollout” and authorities’ concern over the delta variant as the reasons for the shut down.
NSW recorded 22 new locally acquired infections on Friday, the biggest rise in daily Covid-19 cases since this latest outbreak began.
The increase in cases prompted NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian to announce a week long lockdown for people who work or live in Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick and the City of Sydney local government areas.

The Wall Street Journal said Sydney’s outbreak was “small by global standards” but “reflects rising concern among officials” over the delta covid variant.
The BBC reported Sydney was “battling to contain an outbreak” and it had “also fuelled criticism over the federal government’s slow vaccination rollout”.
“Vaccine hesitancy has also been a problem,” the BBC said.

US radio network NPR reported that Australia was among a handful of nations forced to “reimplement lockdown measures” to control coronavirus numbers.
“In the US, the picture looks very different where, despite warnings from health officials, many places are still reopening,” NPR reported.
According to American news wire agency the Associated Press, Australia had been “relatively successful in containing coronavirus clusters” but was now finding the Delta strain “more challenging”.
“The nation’s vaccine rollout has been slower than in many other developed countries,” it also reported.
UK newspaper The Daily Express said the lockdown was to combat a “struggle to contain a recent spike” in cases by health officials.
“Parts of Sydney lock down as an outbreak grows in Australia’s biggest city,” the headline in the New York Times read.
The article, written by the Times’ Sydney-based bureau chief, said the lockdown would “will affect a large portion” of the city and that the “new restrictions reflect a mix of widening concern about the infectiousness of the Delta variant”.
The Washington Post reported that authorities and experts were “especially troubled” by how easily the Delta strain had spread in Sydney.
