NSW has recorded two locally acquired COVID-19 cases and more than 1000 people are in isolation as the state races to get on top of a cluster in Bondi.

The state’s health authority was alerted of a third case after 8pm on Friday that will be included in Sunday’s numbers. One of the two cases reported on Saturday was first announced on Friday.

There were 26,631 tests reported on Saturday. Although this number is higher than the 21,678 tests reported on Friday, NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the number of tests conducted was “nowhere near what we’d like to see”.

“The weapon we have to defeat this virus that keeps coming back is to keep making sure you get tested and making sure you use the QR codes”, he said.

Another four cases were acquired in hotel quarantine, bringing the total number of cases in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 5448.

NSW Health has updated the advice in light of the severity of the Delta variant. Minister Hazzard said the new NSW Health advice recommended anyone who had visited one of the listed places on the same day it was visited by a positive case to get a coronavirus test, regardless of time discrepancies, as a precaution.

He said there was no need for those who did not come into direct contact with a positive case to isolate after testing, but he warned that they should monitor for symptoms.

“This particular variant of the virus is a new and present danger. It’s a virus that’s capable of transmitting even when we have a fleeting proximity between the individual who is infectious and any of us who may be passing by,” he said.

“My very strong message to the community is that if you have been in or around the Westfield Shopping centre — you have to understand it’s not just Myer and David Jones — the concern we have is that even if you happen to be passing a person who was infectious... we could see you becoming positive.”

NSW Health’s Dr Jeremy McAnulty expanded on the unique health advice by directly highlighting that anyone who attended Westfield Bondi Junction on Saturday, June 12, between 11am-12pm and Sunday, June 13, between 1pm and 2pm and 4pm and 4.30pm needs to get tested for COVID-19.

“While you don’t have to strictly isolate we ask that you minimise your exposure to other people until you get a negative test. That means wear a mask if you’re out, work from home if you can, don’t go to gatherings, don’t go to places where there are crowds such as a ski field,” he continued.

“We want to take a very precautious approach to this evolving situation to get on top of it, so we’re asking for everyone’s co-operation in the community to get tested and minimise exposure to other people even if you haven’t been to one of those specific venues we’ve identified.”

NSW Health also asks anyone who attended the following venue at the time listed to contact them on 1800 943 553, get tested and self-isolate until they receive further advice:

  • The Broken Drum cafe in Fairy Meadow on Friday June 18, 10.20am- 10.40am

They also ask anyone who attended the following venues or public transport routes to immediately get tested and self-isolate until they receive a negative result as they are considered to be a casual contact of COVID-19:

  • Plants Plus in Pennant Hills on Saturday June 12 12.30pm-12.45pm;
  • Flower Power Garden Center in Glenhaven on Saturday June 12 from 2pm-2.30pm;
  • T2 Inner West and Leppington Line from Newton Station to Central Station on Sunday June 13 departing at approximately 2.55pm and arriving at 3:01pm;
  • T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line from Central Station to Bondi Junction Station on Sunday June 13 departing at approximately 3.05pm or 3.11pm and arriving approximately at 3.23pm or 3.26pm;
  • T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line from Bondi Junction to Central train station on Tuesday June 15 departing at approximately 8:03am and arriving at approximately 8.15am;
  • T8 Airport and South Line from Central station to Campbelltown station on Tuesday June 15 departing at approximately 8.18am and arriving at approximately 9.16am;
  • T8 Airport and South line from Campbelltown station to Central station on Tuesday June 15 departing at approximately 1.18pm and arriving at approximately 2.14pm; and
  • T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line from Central station to Bondi Junction on Tuesday June 15 departing at approximately 2.19pm and arriving at approximately 2.33pm.

Meanwhile, Hazzard dismissed media reports on Friday of a positive case in the northern beaches, saying no such case had been recorded by NSW Health.

The new advice comes after 1000 people are already in isolation as NSW Health authorities attempt to contain a highly transmissible COVID-19 variant spreading in Sydney’s east.

A man in his 50s tested positive on Friday after attending Bondi Junction Myer at the same time as a limousine driver who tested positive to the Delta variant of COVID-19 earlier this week.

Sydney brand outlet Birkenhead Point posted on their Facebook page on Friday night to alert the public that NSW Health had confirmed a customer who tested positive to COVID-19 visited a number of stores in the centre between 10am and 2pm on Tuesday, June 15.

Meanwhile, Victoria recorded just one new local case of COVID-19 on Saturday morning. The positive case is a primary close contact of a previous case and has been in quarantine for the duration of their infectious period.

The southern state also recorded two cases in hotel quarantine and received 30,843 test results in the 24 hours leading up to the announcement.
