Victorian Nationals miffed by Barnaby Joyce’s promotion

By Paul Sakkal

The deputy leader of the Victorian National Party says she is disappointed by the return of Barnaby Joyce to the federal leadership and is urging her Canberra counterparts to embrace more ambitious action on climate change.

Euroa MP Steph Ryan, who represents parts of central and north-eastern Victoria, said she believed Mr Joyce’s past actions that forced him to resign in 2018 – after an affair with a staffer and a sexual harassment allegation – disqualified him from leading the party.

“I’ve never made any secret of the fact that I think Barnaby Joyce’s previous actions didn’t really make him eligible for the top job,” she said. “Barnaby Joyce needs to demonstrate why he should be back where he is.”

Ms Ryan urged federal Nationals MPs to concentrate on representing their communities rather than squabbling over internal positions.

“I think they’ve been focused on themselves a little too much … I’d like to see the federal partyroom focus on the interests of rural and regional Australians,” she said, adding she had a strong personal relationship with departed leader Michael McCormack, who she was disappointed to see go.

One of the catalysts for the federal leadership change was disquiet among some federal MPs that the Morrison government’s preference to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 was too ambitious and could harm certain parts of the economy.

Ms Ryan said many agricultural firms were already pushing for this target and would achieve it through innovative farming and other measures.

“The sector is looking to move there, so I hope the federal Nationals actually use this opportunity argue for strong investment in research and development for our agricultural industries.”

PM brings quarantine into the picture

By Broede Carmody

In case you missed it, Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce was sworn in as Deputy Prime Minister earlier this morning.

In a development that won’t be unfamiliar to those of us who’ve had to quarantine after travelling or taking a coronavirus test, PM Scott Morrison was in attendance via video link.

Government ‘crab walking’ on climate change: Albanese

By Broede Carmody

Contrast what Environment Minister Sussan Ley is saying about the Great Barrier Reef with federal Labor leader Anthony Albanese.

Here’s what the Opposition Leader had to say on ABC TV earlier this morning:

“They [the Government] have been crab walking. This is a government that is incapable of actually saying what its position is [on climate change]. Every country in the G7, every state and territory, the National Farmers’ Federation, the Business Council – every major business in Australia – has committed to net zero emissions by 2050.

“Yet this government has to use weasel words because they haven’t got the ticker to take on the climate sceptics in their own backbench and now a climate sceptic as the Deputy Prime Minister of Australia. The fact is that climate change is an opportunity for Australia to create jobs, whilst we’re lowering energy prices and lowering emissions and this government is incapable of embracing that opportunity.

“I want to save the reef. There are so many jobs dependent upon the reef that we can’t ignore the challenge of climate change.”

Great Barrier Reef warning is ‘flawed’: Ley

By Broede Carmody

Environment Minister Sussan Ley is going on the attack this morning.

Ms Ley is hitting back at a draft recommendation from UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee that foreshadows listing the Great Barrier Reef as in danger.

“The process has been flawed and I’m seeking to have that corrected,” the Environment Minister told ABC TV earlier this morning.

“If UNESCO wants to break faith with us and its own processes, that is very much a matter for them, but it is very much a matter for me to stand up for the people of the reef, for the farmers that have worked so hard to deliver the best quality catchments along the reef, and for the fact that it is a marine park managed, as I said, to the highest possible standard.

“We are restoring ecosystems, working with traditional owners, we have world-leading science on coral restoration and ... the World Heritage Committee didn’t use the latest data, they did a desktop review. On all levels, I’m sorry, I’m giving them a big fail and I’m fighting for the reef.”

United Nations warns Great Barrier Reef is in danger

By Broede Carmody

In case you missed it, the United Nations has moved to list the Great Barrier Reef as in danger.

Scientists have back the announcement, arguing the federal government’s lack of action on climate change is to blame. But Environment Minister Sussan Ley says the draft decision is flawed.

NSW opposition leader vows to hold government’s ‘feet to the fire’ over state budget

By Jenny Noyes

NSW Opposition Leader Chris Minns has promised to hold the NSW government’s “feet to the fire” ahead of the state budget today.

Speaking on 2GB on Tuesday morning, Mr Minns said the government has a “mixed record” on the economic management of the state during the pandemic. While he acknowledged the NSW budget deficit has halved since November, Mr Minns said he was “really concerned about the pressure and the bill they’re sending working families”.

He said tolls and taxes are up while local manufacturing - “which I think is the real way to dig NSW out of this challenging economic environment” - is down. Public transport vehicles currently being manufactured overseas are potentially “good middle class jobs for NSW”, he said, and the state needs to “get rid of this ... ideology” that such infrastructure can’t be built locally.

“It’s really important that the government doesn’t say we’re out of the woods” due to the shrinking deficit, much of which is “based on federal government stimulus”, he said.

“I’m going to hold their feet to the fire, I think that’s the job of the NSW Opposition and there’s more to do.”

Mr Minns said the net debt position for NSW is expected to hit $100 billion in the next four years, and the Commonwealth Bank ranked NSW second-last in its assessment of state and territory economies.

He said there is also “more to do” for paramedics, who are on strike today despite the government locking in a 2.5 per cent pay rise.

Banksy launches legal bid to stop famous works from being copied in Australia

By Nick Miller

In arts news, street artist Banksy has launched a bid to protect some of his most famous artworks from being copied and commercially exploited in Australia – however he is using a legal tactic that failed in a European court.

Banksy has applied via a Perth law firm to register two images as trademarks in this country. The applications have been accepted and they will be registered next week, barring any last-minute challenge.
