SA closes borders to Queensland, WA, the NT and the ACT in addition to NSW after 'deterioration' in COVID situation - ABC News

South Australia has closed its borders to Queensland, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and the ACT because of a "very significant deterioration" in the COVID–19 situation across Australia, the state's Premier says.

The state already has restrictions on travel from New South Wales and some sites in Melbourne.

There are exemptions for people relocating to South Australia, South Australians returning to the state, people escaping domestic or family violence, and essential travellers.

They will have to do a 14-day quarantine at home.

The restrictions will come into force immediately but people currently on flights into the state will be subject to lesser restrictions.

All Victorians — not just those from Melbourne — will need to get tested for coronavirus on the first day they arrive in SA.

There are no restrictions on travel from Tasmania.

People from within 100 kilometres of the NSW border will still be able to enter South Australia.

Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier said SA Health was "chasing up miners at the moment" but, so far, there were no cases linked with the case found at the Granites mine in the Northern Territory.

She described the outbreaks interstate as "an enormous wake-up call".

Premier Steven Marshall said the government was worried about possible "seeding" of the Delta variant of the virus from NSW, but that no cases have so far been detected from interstate visitors.

He urged people to get tested if they had any symptoms at all.

"We're pleading with people in our state if they develop any symptoms whatsoever to go and get themselves tested," Mr Marshall said.

"We want to see a very significant increase in testing, effective immediately."

He said a further announcement may be made tomorrow about reducing the numbers allowed at home gatherings, indoor densities and face masks in aged care settings.

"I think South Australia now needs to take decisive action so we can continue to keep our state safe and the economy strong," Mr Marshall said.

The restrictions would likely be in place for at least a week, he said.

Call for testing and vaccinations

About 5,500 people were tested yesterday, which Professor Spurrier was "good for a Saturday".

She urged more people to get vaccinated if they were eligible.

"It is incredibly important," she said.

"We are quite vulnerable at the moment — we have very light restrictions in South Australia and we have only a small proportion of our whole community vaccinated."

She said she was "absolutely very concerned" for Aboriginal communities in the state's far north that regularly travelled to and interacted with people from the Northern Territory.

She said one of the three people who flew into Coober Pedy from NSW tested positive yesterday but it turned out to be a false positive after a negative result today.

"Obviously, we put contact tracing in place and it will be over to SAPOL to determine what happens to those individuals," she said.

Three people tested positive for COVID–19 in South Australia yesterday, all in hotel quarantine.

They were a man in his 30s and two girls.

There are nine active cases in the state.
