Victoria records one new COVID-19 case as restrictions set to ease - The Age

Victoria has recorded one new local coronavirus case, a close contact of a positive case who had been quarantining throughout their infectious period, as restrictions are set to be further eased across the state.

The new restrictions, which come into effect at 11.59pm on Thursday, will be in place for two weeks before authorities review them again. Acting Premier James Merlino said on Wednesday that officials wanted to give Victorians some certainty in the lead-up to school holidays next week.

“We all want to be back at birthday parties, barbecues at home, to see friends, to explore the coast, the regions, and take the kids on a trip somewhere,” Mr Merlino said.

Three new coronavirus cases were recorded in hotel quarantine in the 24 hours to midnight on Wednesday.

There were 22,812 test results processed in the past 24 hours and 17,803 people received their vaccine doses.

The relaxed restrictions that come into effect at 11.59pm will mean public gatherings of up to 50 people outdoors will be permitted, and up to 15 people will be allowed to visit homes across the state.

Offices will be allowed to operate at up to 75 per cent of their capacity, or with 30 people if their workplace has a total of less than 40 people.

Restaurants and cafes can welcome up to 300 patrons for seated service indoors if they abide by a density quotient of one person per four square metres, while smaller venues can have up to 25 patrons before the density quotient applies.

Public events and outdoor stadiums can operate with a 50 per cent cap on attendance up to 25,000 people. That cap will apply at events at the MCG, Marvel Stadium and AAMI Park.

Mr Merlino said on Wednesday that, subject to satisfactory health advice, that limit would be lifted to 85 per cent capacity on July 1.

Physical recreation and sport facilities can open with a density quotient of one person per four square metres up to 300 indoors and 1000 outdoors.

Funerals can go ahead with up to 300 people, as can weddings, but dance floors will be banned.

The indoor face mask mandate will remain for at least another fortnight as will the requirement for masks to be carried at all times.
