Questions from the audience

Hi Bridget!

Are we allowed to go to previously arranged specialist appointments? And is my mum allowed to come over to watch the kids so I can go? That’s medical and compassionate needs, right?

-Curious patient

Morning, Curious patient.

According to the NSW government's guidelines, going out "for medical or caring reasons, including obtaining a COVID-19 vaccination" is a reasonable excuse to leave the house, as is providing care or assistance to a vulnerable person or to provide emergency assistance.

Good morning, Bridget, and good morning to everyone waking up in lockdown - thank you for keeping the rest of us safe. I am hearing that the symptoms for the Delta variant are a little different to what we've all been on the lookout for, and wonder if the ABC can provide us with a source or two so that people can be made aware of what to look for? It sounds like wemshouldnt be so focused on a dry cough or loss of taste anymore... Thank you. Hope everyone manages a good day today.

Morning, Not in lockdown but not smug.

You're right — new data from a UK symptom-tracking app suggests COVID-19 infection may now start off "more like a bad cold", with a headache and runny nose among the most commonly reported symptoms in younger people.

The new data has experts concerned about the risk of COVID symptoms being overlooked as the common cold, especially as winter takes hold in Australia and there have been recent outbreaks caused by the Delta variant.

Study lead researcher Tim Spector said the most frequently reported symptoms have changed in recent months as the Delta variant became the UK's dominant strain.

Data shows the top symptom being reported by people under 40 is a headache, followed by a sore throat, runny nose and fever.

A cough is now only the fifth most-common symptom, and loss of smell no longer cracks the top 10.

Good morning! I seem to remember that in the past kids did not need to wear masks but I can't find any mention of that this time. Do my kids need to wear masks in non-residential indoor settings?
Loving your work!

Morning guys — here's what the NSW government's guidelines have to say:

Exemptions: Children, toddlers under 2 years, and babies

  • Masks should not be worn by toddlers under 2 years of age and babies, as they are a choking and suffocation risk.
  • Children 12 years and under are exempt but are encouraged to wear masks where practicable.
