A rogue deer running through the empty streets of locked down inner-city Melbourne has been euthanised.

Stunned locals reported seeing the deer on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning and Victoria Police responded to reports it was running through traffic in the Clifton Hill and Northcote areas on both days.

Wildlife Victoria, which also fielded multiple calls about the animal, confirmed to The Age that the deer had been euthanised by Vets for Compassion on Saturday morning.

The vets who arrived on the scene made the assessment that the most compassionate thing for the animal was that it be humanly euthanised, according to the Wildlife Victoria spokeswoman.

A wildlife rescuer who attended the scene, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Age the deer was euthanised in Northcote.

“About six police cars and multiple vets had it surrounded near the train line but it escaped,” he said.

“It was contained in an alley a few hundred meters away [and] the vets tranquilised the deer.

“It was assessed as [having] severe wear to its hooves and a head injury so it was euthanised. Rescuers assisted council for removal.”

It came after social media lit up on Saturday morning with videos and pictures from locals who had seen the deer bolting through the locked-down streets of Fitzroy.

Resident Rosie Burke had just finished a run with her boyfriend about 10.30am and was stretching on a bench on Johnston Street when the terrified animal ran past her.

“We were just on the edge of Johnston Street and we saw this deer running towards us,” she said. “Some people are saying it was a cow, but it was definitely a deer with full-on antlers”.

Ms Burke said the animal “looked terrified” and ran in front of a car before dashing down George Street.

Ms Burke captured a few seconds of footage showing the deer bolting in front of the moving car.

“I couldn’t capture the video quick enough I was in so much shock,” she said. “It was absolutely bizarre and shocking, and sad - he looked really scared. Luckily the road was quiet.”

It is not known where the deer came from.

The strange scene echoes other memorable moments where wild animals have run loose in Australian capital cities.
