Premier Daniel Andrews is waiting on a report from his medical team next week as he sets sights on a return to work later this month.
Mr Andrews posted a message to Victorians on his Facebook page on Wednesday night following the news Melbourne would remain in lockdown for another seven days while some restrictions would be eased in regional Victoria.
The Premier said he felt for those in Melbourne still in lockdown and told people to “keep fighting” and he also praised Acting Premier James Merlino for his work in the role while Mr Andrews recovered from serious back and neck injuries.
“I’m sorry I can’t be there with everyone right now but I’m so grateful to James for his leadership,” Mr Andrews said in a comment under his post following questions about when he would return.
“I have more scans and a meeting with my medical team next week.
“I’ll let you know how that goes and exactly when I’ll be back on deck later this month.”
The Premier was injured when he fell on wet and slippery stairs in March, at a home on the Mornington Peninsula.
He was initially taken to Peninsula Private Hospital before being moved to The Alfred trauma centre. X-rays revealed he broke ribs on his left and right sides and sustained an acute compression fracture of the T7 vertebra, but suffered no head injuries.
He spent six days in hospital and was intially expecting to be back at work six weeks after he was sent home.
Victorians are enduring their fourth lockdown since the COVID-19 pandemic began early last year.
