By Abbir Dib

Victoria has recorded two new locally acquired COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours - there are also six new cases in hotel quarantine.

29,816 tests were taken and 19,940 vaccine doses were administered yesterday.

There are now 85 active cases across the state.

Authorities track recent hotel guests in Delta virus search

Victorian authorities racing to find the source of the state’s highly-contagious Delta variant outbreak are tracing the movements of recent coronavirus-positive hotel quarantine guests whose genomic data could not be determined.

As Melbourne’s latest cluster grew to nine, Victorian authorities have stepped up testing and isolation requirements for the Delta outbreak in efforts to prevent a third wave of infections taking hold.

The source of Victoria’s newest outbreak remained a mystery on Saturday and while a leading epidemiologist stated it was highly likely to be a hotel leak, experts say it’s unclear if this happened in Victoria where the cases lived, NSW where they travelled, or elsewhere. It would be the 22nd known hotel leak in Australia.

In an exclusive interview with The Sunday Age, Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton revealed the heightened transmissibility of the variant meant officials had introduced stricter quarantine measures for those identified as contacts.

Victoria clinging to Australian F1 hope despite Singapore GP cancellation

By Sam McClure

The Victorian government is still clinging to hope that the Australian Formula One Grand Prix can still go ahead in November, despite Singapore’s October grand prix being cancelled on Friday.

It is the second year in a row that the Singapore GP has been called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, race organisers said in a statement.

Melbourne’s race, which was originally scheduled to take place on March 21 at Albert Park, has been pushed back to November 19-21 due to the pandemic. Singapore joins Canada off this year’s F1 calendar and is unlikely to be the last to fall victim of the pandemic with Japan, Brazil, Mexico and Australia all with doubts over them from the original list of 23 rounds.

Virus fragments found in wastewater across north-west suburbs

By Abbir Dib

Viral fragments of COVID-19 have been detected in a sewer catchment affecting suburbs in Melbourne’s inner north and west.

An alert from the Department of Health late on Saturday night revealed wastewater samples taken last Thursday, June 3 are of concern.

“This new detection is of interest as there are currently no confirmed COVID-19 cases in that area but it does contain exposure sites and is near West Melbourne” the DHS statement said.

“The unexpected detections may be due to someone who has had COVID-19 that is no longer infectious continuing to ‘shed’ the virus or it may be due to an active but undiagnosed infectious case.”

The department advised residents and recent visitors to the following suburbs to get tested if any symptoms develop: Aberfeldie, Essendon, Essendon West, Flemington, Footscray, Kensington, Maribyrnong, Moonee Ponds, Parkville and Travancore.

The wastewater testing in these areas has increased.

‘I can’t be bothered’: Victorians battling ‘compounding fatigue’ of lockdowns

By Wendy Tuohy

Reports of increased family conflict and bullying and harassment at work spiked significantly in the first week of Victoria’s fourth lockdown, as one of Australia’s biggest providers of corporate, government and private psychologists noted a huge increase in demand.

Rhonda Andrews, chief executive of the city-based Barrington Centre, said many of the company’s 320 psychologists around the country had been “pulled in to assist in Victoria” after an 82 per cent increase in demand for support between Thursday, May 27, and Thursday, June 3.

Business consultant and leadership coach Vicki Macdermid, who uses horses in her leadership training work, describes this lockdown even after a little over a week as “depleting – and I’m by nature a very optimistic person”.

“The three top issues we’re seeing have been a 40 per cent increase in family conflict, a 55 per cent increase in bullying and harassment allegations at work and an 82 per cent increase in mental health requests for service,” said Ms Andrews, a psychologist of more than 30 years.

Daniel Andrews has home haircut ahead of big week

By Abbir Dib

Premier Daniel Andrew’s wife, Catherine Andrews, posted a photo of her husband as she trims his hair on Saturday night.

The post was shared with 13,000 Twitter followers and 11,000 Instagram followers around 9:30pm. The couple’s son Joseph was credited for taking the photo.

“On the tools again. Practice makes perfect I love this one. Getting better every day” Catherine captioned the posts.

The Premier has been recovering from a serious back injury since suffering from a fall while on holiday in March.

When asked in the comments if the haircut meant a return to work next week, Catherine didn’t provide a date.

“Not until he gets the all clear from his medical team” she said.

Catherine’s post follows the Premier’s own tweets on Wednesday night announcing his return to office later in June.

“I have more scans and a meeting with my medical team next week,” the Premier said.

“I’ll let you know how that goes and exactly when I’ll be back on deck later this month.

“I’m sorry I can’t be there with everyone but I’m so grateful to [acting Premier] James Merlino for his leadership.”
