Youngest daughter of Biloela family medically evacuated to Perth - NEWS.com.au

The Queensland-born youngest daughter of a Tamil asylum seeker family in Christmas Island’s immigration detention has been medically evacuated to a Perth hospital with a suspected blood infection.

Three-year-old Tharnicaa Murugappan and her mother, Priya, are currently on board a flight from the island, after almost two weeks of the little girl being unwell.

The HometoBilo Twitter account shared an image of Tharnicaa this afternoon, writing that she had been hospitalised yesterday on Christmas Island “after suffering a high fever, vomiting/diarrhoea & dizziness for 10 days”.

Despite ongoing requests from Ms Murugappan since May 25 – when the three-year-old ran a fever – detention centre staff allegedly refused to take Tharnicaa to hospital on the island until Sunday.

In a statement, HomeToBilo said Ms Murugappan said “International Health and Medical Services (IHMS), who are responsible for administering health services in detention, only distributed Panadol and Nurofen” to Tharnicaa.

Ms Murugappan said she was also handed a piece of paper “that explained common flu symptoms”.

It is believed Tharnicaa has septicaemia.

“I am feeling very scared and worried for my little girl,” Ms Murugappan said in a statement from Change.org.

“She has been sick for many days, it took a long time for her to get to the hospital.

“She is already asking for her papa, it is going to be very hard being away from her dad and sister. It is very hard for our family to be separated when our daughter is sick.”

In a statement, the Greens Immigration spokesman, Nick McKim, said the Murugappan “family’s treatment has been appalling and disgraceful”.

“They have been exiled to a remote island, and detained indefinitely, having built a life for themselves in Queensland,” he said.

“Physical and mental health problems have always gone hand-in-hand with offshore detention – and yet their detention continues.

“It is beyond unconscionable that they would be sent back to Christmas Island.

“They must be resettled in our community urgently, before any more damage is done.”

Long fight to stay in Biloela

Ms Murugappan and her husband, Nades, came to Australia by boat in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

They settled in Biloela, a town of about 6000 in Central Queensland, and started a family, having Kopika, now 5, and Tharnicaa.

The Federal Court judgment said the parents were considered “unauthorised maritime arrivals” under Australian law.

Although their daughters were born in Australia, their parents’ immigration status also made the two girls “unauthorised maritime arrivals”, the judgment said.

In March 2018 the family were taken into detention after they were denied a visa which would allow them to stay in Australia.

In August 2019 they were transferred to Christmas Island.

They have fought to remain in Australia and Biloela ever since.

The Biloela community started the #HomeToBilo campaign which went national, calling on the government to allow the family to live in the community that has embraced them.

“It has been nearly three years since our friends were taken from their home, from a loving community, and from safety,” the #HometoBilo campaign said in a statement earlier this year.

“Since then, there have been dozens of days in court and over a thousand days without freedom.

“We are deeply concerned about the ongoing wellbeing of our friends Priya, Nades and their beautiful girls.

“All of this suffering could have been avoided.”
