Victoria records four new cases of COVID-19

By Broede Carmody

Victoria’s daily coronavirus numbers are in.

The state recorded four new cases of COVID-19 in the community and zero cases in hotel quarantine yesterday. That’s off the back of 23,679 test results.

The state’s health department says the four new cases are from the same household. Greater Melbourne is due to come out of lockdown, with some restrictions still in place, from 11.59pm tonight.

Tamil family’s detention ‘not a case of being mean’: Andrews

By Broede Carmody

Earlier this morning, we brought you the news that some Liberal MPs are pushing for the Tamil asylum-seeker family being held on Christmas Island to be allowed to return to the Australian mainland. Those revelations are courtesy of my colleague David Crowe.

But speaking on Sunrise earlier this morning, Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews appeared to dash those plans.

“I actually haven’t said that I’m investigating resettlement options for that family,” she said. “What I did say is that I was looking at investigating resettlement options in a range of circumstances.

“It’s not a case of being mean. We are very strong as a government and our policy in relation to border protection. Quite frankly, I am not going to have people dying trying to come to Australia by sea on my watch. I am not going to open the gates to the people smugglers.”

The family’s youngest daughter, who is in Perth with her mother for medical treatment, was born in Australia.

We’ll be sure to bring you the latest on this story as more comes to hand.

New COVID-19 exposure sites in Melbourne’s north

By David Estcourt

The number of official COVID-19 exposure sites in Victoria remained below 200 overnight after health authorities added 22 new exposure windows at the Arcare Maidstone aged care facility and four new areas of concern in Melbourne’s north.

All of the exposure windows at Arcare Maidstone are linked to the facility’s Magnolia Unit and the communal facilities area. Several recent cases have been linked to the site, with residents, staff members and close contacts testing positive.

Meanwhile a BP and Bunnings in Thomastown, a Coles in Bundoora and an independent grocery in Reservoir are among the newest Victorian exposure sites.

Russia outlaws organisations with ties to opposition leader Alexei Navalny

By Broede Carmody

In case you missed it, Russia has banned the organisations founded by the country’s opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

It’s a blow to Navalny’s pro-democracy party and his supporters, who are hoping to run for parliamentary seats later this year. Anyone associated with the politician’s Anti-Corruption Foundation could now face lengthy prison terms – even if they simply share materials.

Navalny was arrested earlier this year after he returned to Russia after months spent in Germany recovering from nerve agent poisoning.

‘We’re so angry’: Regional mayor slams woman who drove from Melbourne to Queensland

By Broede Carmody

The Mayor of Moree in north-west NSW, Katrina Humphries, has slammed the woman who drove from Melbourne to Queensland despite the southern city being in lockdown.

A reminder that there are several exposure sites across NSW given the woman in question drove through the state in order to get to Queensland. Four exposure sites are in Moree alone: including the Amaroo Tavern, a cafe, Woolworths and a motel.

Communities along the Newell Highway are on high alert.

Communities along the Newell Highway are on high alert.

“I’m glad you reminded me it is breakfast TV because I couldn’t say what I [actually think],” Ms Humphries said on the Today show just now.

“This is disgraceful. This is absolutely what we feared for 16 months. That you get irresponsible people thinking they can write their own rulebook.

“We’re not resourced like the cities are. We don’t have instant pop-up testing zones and things like that. We have to set them all up, bring in people. So it’s an absolute dog’s breakfast and we’re so angry.”

Ms Humphries added that a potential outbreak was the last thing her community needed because residents had recently endured devastating floods.

“People are really, really nervous,” she said. “They are apprehensive. But Moree, we are a tough community.”
