Queensland’s Health Minister Yvette D’Ath and the state’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young are due to address the media shortly.

It comes after a woman drove from Victoria to Queensland and later tested positive to coronavirus. Watch the full press conference live below.

Couple’s contacts test negative

Back to Queensland’s COVID-19 update and the state’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young says anyone who lives in the Sunshine Coast, Goondiwindi or Toowoomba who develops coronavirus symptoms needs to come forward for testing.

Of the 17 close contacts identified, three have tested negative. Two of the close contacts to test negative so far are parents the couple were staying with in Caloundra (it’s not clear if they are the woman’s parents or her partner’s).

“They were staying in a household in Caloundra,” Dr Young said. “Some parents ... have tested negative, which is very reassuring. But we need to continue all of that testing.”

‘Serious risk’ of COVID-19 outbreak in regional NSW: Health Minister

By Daniella White

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard says there’s a very real risk to the state after a woman, who later tested positive for COVID-19, left lockdown in Melbourne and travelled to Queensland via NSW.

“I am very concerned that we’ve had people leave the lockdown and travel across our state and into Queensland, putting everyone at risk,” he said on Thursday. “What we need to understand is why that was done and there’s no clarity on that at this point.

“This is a very serious risk, it’s a real and present danger to us throughout the state.”

Mr Hazzard said NSW health authorities were hoping to interview the woman and her husband, who are currently in Queensland, on Thursday.

“The community should be alerted to the fact there may well be more venues of concern across the state,” he said.

Mr Hazzard said the couple could face fines or criminal charges if it was found there was no legitimate reason to travel through the state.

The woman and her partner left Melbourne on June 1 and arrived in Queensland on June 5. NSW and Queensland health authorities have listed several exposure sites from the interstate journey on their websites.

Husband of woman who travelled from Victoria to Qld tests positive to COVID-19

Queensland’s Health Minister Yvette D’Ath is speaking in Queensland right now.

She says the husband of the woman who travelled from Victoria to Queensland, via regional NSW, has now tested positive to COVID-19. The woman’s partner travelled to Queensland with her despite the sunshine state having a hard border to those in Greater Melbourne due to the coronavirus lockdown.

“The good news is that it appears that both the two individuals are at the end of their infectious period, which means the risk is lower than we were expecting yesterday,” Ms D’Ath said.

“[It] is really positive news. But we are saying to people, please have a look at the exposure sites. If you have been to an exposure site, you need to get tested and quarantine.”

Queensland confirmed eight new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, two of which are the woman who travelled to the Sunshine coast with her husband. The pair travelled from Melbourne on June 1, arriving in Queensland on the June 5, and she travelled up through NSW and crossed the border at Goondiwindi.

The other six cases were all detected in hotel quarantine and are not linked to the couple. Authorities have urged people, especially in the Sunshine Coast region, to get vaccinated if they can, with extra doses sent to vaccination hubs in the region by the federal government.

Victoria records four new cases of COVID-19

By Broede Carmody

Victoria’s daily coronavirus numbers are in.

The state recorded four new cases of COVID-19 in the community and zero cases in hotel quarantine yesterday. That’s off the back of 23,679 test results.

The state’s health department says the four new cases are from the same household and investigations are underway into how they became infected with the virus. Greater Melbourne is due to come out of lockdown, with some restrictions still in place, from 11.59pm tonight.

More than 20,000 vaccine doses were administered by Victorian authorities yesterday.

Tamil family’s detention ‘not a case of being mean’: Andrews

By Broede Carmody

Earlier this morning, we brought you the news that some Liberal MPs are pushing for the Tamil asylum-seeker family being held on Christmas Island to be allowed to return to the Australian mainland. Those revelations are courtesy of my colleague David Crowe.

But speaking on Sunrise earlier this morning, Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews appeared to dash those plans.

“I actually haven’t said that I’m investigating resettlement options for that family,” she said. “What I did say is that I was looking at investigating resettlement options in a range of circumstances.

“It’s not a case of being mean. We are very strong as a government and our policy in relation to border protection. Quite frankly, I am not going to have people dying trying to come to Australia by sea on my watch. I am not going to open the gates to the people smugglers.”

The family’s youngest daughter, who is in Perth with her mother for medical treatment, was born in Australia.

We’ll be sure to bring you the latest on this story as more comes to hand.

New COVID-19 exposure sites in Melbourne’s north

By David Estcourt

The number of official COVID-19 exposure sites in Victoria remained below 200 overnight after health authorities added 22 new exposure windows at the Arcare Maidstone aged care facility and four new areas of concern in Melbourne’s north.

All of the exposure windows at Arcare Maidstone are linked to the facility’s Magnolia Unit and the communal facilities area. Several recent cases have been linked to the site, with residents, staff members and close contacts testing positive.

Meanwhile a BP and Bunnings in Thomastown, a Coles in Bundoora and an independent grocery in Reservoir are among the newest Victorian exposure sites.
