Family's lucky escape after electrical switchboard sparks devastating fire - 9News

A Sydney family is lucky to be alive after a faulty electrical switchboard caught fire, completely destroying their home.

The fire broke out around 2am today at a home on Wilson Parade, Heathcote, in Sydney's south, as a family of three slept inside.

Fire and Rescue NSW superintendent Adam Dewberry said the fire started in a bedroom.

He said a man, in his 30s, was woken up by smoke and that it was a "miracle" he'd awakened.

The man and his two parents were able to escape the home that soon became fully engulfed in fire.

It took firefighters almost two hours to extinguish the blaze.

Dewberry said the fire was started by an overloaded or faulty electrical switchboard.

"It's a safety reminder first and foremost to make sure you have working smoke alarms," he said.

"If you're sleeping with your bedroom door closed, make sure you've got smoke alarms in there."
