Police have shot and killed a man in the main street of Nowra on the New South Wales South Coast after he produced a gun while visiting a doctor at a local medical clinic.
Key points:
- A witness says people were seen fleeing the area as armed police moved in, with gunshots heard 20 minutes later
- Police say the man, who was reportedly in possession of a firearm, emerged from a medical clinic and confronted them
- They say the man was treated at the scene by ambulance officers after being shot but could not be revived
Police say they were called to the clinic on Junction Street just before 1pm following reports the 34-year-old patient was carrying a semi-automatic handgun.
It is alleged the man was armed when he emerged from the clinic at about 2:40pm and confronted officers.
Four people were able to escape from inside the doctors surgery, leaving the gunman alone as he conversed with police.
New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Peter Cotter said the man armed himself with a ballistic shield dropped by police.
"The man picked up the shield, further brandished the gun, raising it in the air," he said.
Assistant Commissioner Cotter said that was when police fired, with witnesses reporting the sound of up of six shots.
The 34-year-old man, who did not have a "significant criminal history", was treated at the scene by ambulance officers but could not be revived.
"He is known to police, but generally that has come through medical episodes and, quite obviously and more recently, psychological medical episodes, which have required our intervention," Assistant Commissioner Cotter said.
"The next of kin of this man have been informed and obviously it is a tragic time and a tragic event for all of his family and all of his friends."
A forensic investigation is ongoing.
Armed police move in
Keira Beattie, from the nearby Sturgess Newsagency, said people were seen fleeing the area as heavily armed police moved in.
Hollie Spence, who owns a hair and beauty business on Junction Street, said there was an "eerie" atmosphere as the police operation unfolded.
"The SWAT team came in, and everyone was cleared [from the street]," she said.
"And then probably within 20 minutes, we heard quite a lot of gunshots all at once.
"And then the police seem to have looked a bit more relaxed and an ambulance was there within like 2.5 seconds of the gunshots.
"They told us to clear out of the area in case any shots were to ricochet and hit outsiders. So, it's been little bit confronting," she said.
