The surfer, 64, was in the water with a friend off Elliston when he was believed to have been bitten on the leg.
He was taken to Elliston Hospital and a medical retrieval team on board a Flying Doctor plan has been deployed to transfer him to Adelaide, about 600 kilometres away.
His injuries are not life-threatening, and a photo of what is believed to be his damaged surfboard has been circulating online.
The beach where the attack happened has been closed.
This marks the sixth shark attack in South Australia in under 12 months.
